Introduction: the holes don't appear at the moment you find them

Late September, you open the bottom drawer — the one that hasn't been touched since May. The merino jumper you put away clean has three holes in it, always in the same sort of place: the armpit, the collar, a turned-back cuff. Beside it, a small silky case the colour of wool, about the length of a grain of rice. You've just discovered the damage done by the clothes moth — inflicted in June and July, not this morning.

That's the whole difficulty with this pest: the adult moth you squash against the wall eats nothing at all. It doesn't even have functional mouthparts. The culprit is the larva, which lives for several months in total darkness, pressed flat against the fibre, digesting keratin — the protein that wool, cashmere, silk, felt, fur and feathers share with your hair.

As the season approaches when woollens come back out and summer clothes go away, there's a window of a few weeks to break the cycle before winter. This guide explains which species you actually have at home, why "shock" treatments almost always fail, and which protocol delivers a measurable result.

Clothes moth or pantry moth: don't aim at the wrong target

Many failed treatments stem from mistaking one species for another. The two families have neither the same diet, nor the same hiding places, nor the same pheromones — and traps sold for one are of no interest whatsoever to the other.

A second textile species exists, the case-bearing clothes moth (Tinea pellionella), recognisable by the small portable case the larva carries around like a hermit crab. The treatment is identical, but it is even fonder of very dirty fibres and of bird or rodent nests lodged in the loft — worth checking if the infestation keeps coming back for no obvious reason.

The life cycle, or why the problem drags on

Understanding the timetable of Tineola bisselliella is enough to explain why most one-off interventions fail.

  • A female lays 40 to 250 eggs, glued one by one directly onto the fibre, in folds and seams.
  • Hatching takes 4 to 10 days in summer, longer in a cool home.
  • The larval stage is the only destructive one, and it lasts from 6 weeks to more than 2 years depending on temperature and food quality.
  • Pupation takes place in a cocoon often located away from the garment: a skirting board, the back of a piece of furniture, the corner of a rug.
  • The adult lives 15 to 30 days and does not feed.

Two practical consequences. First, seeing adults in flight means a generation has just completed its development: the damage is already done. Second, a treatment that targets only the clothes leaves untouched the pupae hidden in the gaps. Central heating has also changed things profoundly: in a home kept at 20 °C all year round, the species runs through two to four generations a year instead of the single one it once managed.

What the larvae are really after

Perfectly clean wool is poor food. Larvae develop far better on fibres carrying organic residues: sweat, sebum, food traces, animal urine. That's why holes cluster at the armpits, collars and cuffs, and on rugs under furniture where dust and skin flakes build up and are never vacuumed away.

One simple rule to remember: a woollen textile stored dirty is a food supply; the same textile stored clean is only a mediocre shelter. Washing before storage is the single most effective measure of all — and it's free.

Spotting an infestation before the damage

The early signs are discreet but easy to read if you know where to look.

  • Silky cases 5 to 10 mm long, exactly the colour of the textile under attack.
  • Fine powder resembling sand — actually larval droppings — at the bottom of drawers.
  • Localised felting or worn patches on wool rugs, often beneath a sofa or a chest of drawers.
  • Golden moths that scurry rather than fly when you disturb a garment.
  • Clean-edged holes 2 to 5 mm across with irregular borders, unlike burns or snags.

The inspection must cover the areas you never move: under beds, skirting boards behind wardrobes, rug edges, winter coat linings, piano felts, sheepskin slippers, and that bag of clothes "to give away" forgotten in the garage for two winters.

For an honest diagnosis, the best method remains passive monitoring: two or three clothes moth pheromone traps placed at shoulder height in the dressing room, the bedroom and the hallway. They catch the males, solve nothing on their own, but within a fortnight they tell you whether the population is residual or active — and exactly where. That's information the naked eye will never give you.

The five-step eradication protocol

1. Empty the area completely

Partial sorting is pointless: larvae migrate from one garment to another. Take everything out of the wardrobe, including items that aren't wool, and sort on a light-coloured surface. Heavily colonised textiles, riddled with holes and of no value, go straight into a sealed bag and out of the house.

2. Treat every textile with temperature

Keratin isn't cleaned, it's disinfested. Two routes exist, both lethal to eggs and larvae:

  • Heat: a 60 °C wash where the care label allows; otherwise 30 minutes in a tumble dryer on medium heat is often enough, even for an item washed cold.
  • Cold: a minimum of 72 hours at −18 °C in a tightly sealed plastic bag, the reference method for cashmere, silk and delicate pieces. Bringing the item back to room temperature and then running a second freezing cycle increases the kill rate on eggs.

Professional dry cleaning eliminates every stage, but its cost restricts it to coats, suits and structured pieces.

3. Vacuum methodically, then get rid of the bag

This is the most neglected and most decisive step. Vacuum the insides of furniture, grooves, hinges, skirting boards, floorboard cracks, the back and underside of wardrobes, and rugs on both faces. A vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter limits the redistribution of eggs and scales. Empty the bag or canister immediately into an outdoor bin.

For valuable wool rugs, a slow pass, line by line, with a crevice nozzle rather than a rotating brush, extracts more of the larvae lodged at the base of the tufts.

4. Clean the surfaces

Washing shelves and drawers with hot soapy water removes the organic residues that attract egg-laying. Dry them fully before putting anything back: residual damp also encourages silverfish, another cupboard regular, which we cover in our guide to autumn damp.

5. Store in airtight containers

Storage determines how long the result lasts. The "breathable" non-woven garment covers sold for coats won't stop a larva. Airtight storage boxes in polypropylene with a gasket, or thick zip-sealed bags, genuinely isolate disinfested woollens. Large vacuum bags are suitable for long-term storage, provided you accept that the wool will come out flattened.

Repellents: what works and what is folklore

Naphthalene belongs to the past: its sale for domestic use has been banned in the European Union since 2008, on account of its classification as a suspected carcinogen. Don't go looking for it, and don't reuse an old stash inherited from an attic.

The available alternatives fall into three levels of genuine effectiveness.

In other words, a chemical treatment applied without prior disinfestation and without vacuuming gives the illusion of action while leaving the population intact.

A cedar block or lavender essential oil diffuser can complement a healthy wardrobe; it will never make up for an established infestation.

The autumn calendar: four weeks to get ahead

The seasonal wardrobe changeover is the only time of year when everything in your cupboards passes through your hands. It is therefore the ideal window.

  1. Week 1 — inventory. Take out the winter clothes, inspect them in daylight, set out the monitoring traps.
  2. Week 2 — disinfestation. A 60 °C wash or 72 hours in the freezer for everything containing wool, cashmere, silk or fur.
  3. Week 3 — cleaning the container. Full vacuuming, cleaning of furniture, treatment of skirting boards and rugs.
  4. Week 4 — storing the summer clothes. Everything goes away clean, dry, in a sealed container, with fresh cedar blocks.

One last useful habit: second-hand clothes, salvaged rugs, vintage jackets and flea-market items in felt or hide are a classic point of entry. The same treatment — 72 hours in the freezer before anything goes into the wardrobe — applies just as much to textile pieces as to finds brought back from a car boot sale. A boar bristle clothes brush run over collars and shoulders after each wear mechanically removes some of the freshly laid eggs on pieces that can't be washed.

When the situation goes beyond home treatment

Some situations justify calling in a professional:

  • wool carpet laid over an entire floor, impossible to freeze or wash;
  • heritage items (tapestries, taxidermy, historic costumes) requiring controlled anoxia;
