Oriental Hornet in France: The New Invasive Species to Watch in 2026

Introduction: a second exotic hornet nobody was talking about five years ago

When invasive hornets in France come up, everyone thinks of the Asian hornet. For twenty years, Vespa velutina nigrithorax has dominated media coverage, departmental control plans and pest-control invoices. But since 2021, a second species has quietly settled along the Mediterranean coast, and its expansion is accelerating: the Oriental hornet, Vespa orientalis.

First recorded in mainland France in Marseille in 2021, then documented in several neighbourhoods of the Bouches-du-Rhône, and later reported further west and further north season after season, this russet-and-yellow hornet is no longer an entomological curiosity. In 2026 it is the subject of active monitoring by the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle through the Inventaire national du patrimoine naturel (INPN), and of citizen-science programmes, notably those run by INRAE and regional beekeeping associations.

This article is not meant to stir up yet another panic. The aim is to provide what residents of the South, beekeepers and building managers genuinely lack: how to identify it without error, where it nests, what the real level of risk is, and above all how to report it properly. Because with a species in the early stages of colonisation, citizen data is worth as much as a national plan.

What exactly is Vespa orientalis?

The Oriental hornet is native to the Near and Middle East and widely distributed from the eastern Mediterranean basin through to Central Asia and the Horn of Africa. It has long been present in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Israel and Egypt. In recent decades it has pushed westwards across the Mediterranean: Italy (Rome, Sicily, Liguria), Spain, then France.

Its biology broadly resembles that of other European hornets:

  • a founding queen overwinters alone and starts a nest in spring;
  • the colony builds up through the summer;
  • the population peak is reached in late summer and early autumn, with several hundred to a few thousand individuals depending on conditions;
  • the colony then produces reproductive adults and dies off with the first cold spells, only the young queens surviving.

The difference lies in its ecology: Vespa orientalis is a thermophilic and xerophilic species, at home in hot, dry climates. That is precisely what much of the French Mediterranean rim is becoming, which explains why Marseille offers it a near-ideal habitat. It also copes extremely well with urban environments, which hardly helps.

Identifying it without mistakes

This is the crucial point, because most erroneous reports stem from confusion. Three species now coexist in southern France.

The reliable shortcut: the Asian hornet has "yellow socks" and a black thorax; the Oriental hornet is russet with a broad, clean yellow belt across the abdomen; the European hornet is more variegated.

One point naturalists often stress: the Oriental hornet has a yellow band on the top of the head and a yellow abdominal area which, in some individuals, reacts to light. Seen close up, the overall impression is of a russet and gold insect, very different from the markedly darker Asian hornet.

To observe it without getting close, a pair of compact binoculars is genuinely useful: it lets you pin down the colour criteria from five or ten metres, which is precisely the safe distance to keep. And for anyone who wants to go further in identifying garden hymenopterans, an insect identification guide published by Delachaux or Quae remains more reliable than online discussion groups, where mix-ups spread fast.

Where does it nest? The real point of difference

This is where the Oriental hornet changes the picture compared with the Asian hornet.

The Asian hornet typically builds a bulky aerial nest, often high in a tree and visible once the leaves have fallen. The Oriental hornet, by contrast, favours dark, sheltered cavities:

  • roller-shutter boxes;
  • crawl spaces, cellars, ducts;
  • wall cavities, hollow bricks, dry-stone walls;
  • burrows and underground cavities;
  • compost bins, garden sheds, stacks of materials, buried meter boxes;
  • tree hollows.

A very concrete practical consequence: the nest is often discovered too late, when you open something up. A shutter box, a crawl-space hatch, a garage cellar. The interventions reported in Marseille and neighbouring municipalities frequently involve colonies lodged in the building fabric, sometimes just centimetres from a living room.

Another consequence: there is no equivalent of the "I'll spot the nest from my garden in November" reflex. Surveillance relies on watching flight traffic — regular insect comings and goings towards the same opening, early in the morning or at the end of the day, is the most reliable signal.

What level of risk for residents?

Let's stick to the facts. The Oriental hornet is no more venomous than any other hornet. Its sting is painful and causes local swelling, and the real danger depends on two factors: the number of stings and whether the person stung is allergic.

According to the reference data set out by the Assurance Maladie (Ameli) and Vidal on hymenopteran stings:

  • an isolated sting in a non-allergic person is treated locally (cold, disinfection, painkiller);
  • a sting in the mouth or throat warrants an immediate call to the emergency services (15 in France);
  • multiple stings (generally more than about ten, fewer in children) carry a risk of systemic toxic reaction and require medical care;
  • a generalised allergic reaction — widespread hives, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness — is a life-threatening emergency, treated with auto-injectable adrenaline for people already diagnosed.

What makes the Oriental hornet distinctive, then, is not its venom: it is how close its nests are to homes. A colony in a shutter box carries a far higher risk of accidental disturbance than a nest twelve metres up a plane tree.

For people who garden regularly in affected areas, a first-aid kit containing dressings, antiseptic and an instant cold pack is far from excessive — it will come in handy for wasps, bees and splinters anyway. People already known to be allergic must keep the device prescribed by their allergist on them at all times, and replace it before each season.

The impact on bees and orchards

The Oriental hornet is an opportunistic predator. Like the Asian hornet, it hunts by hovering in front of hives and catching foraging bees. Beekeepers in the colonised areas of the eastern Mediterranean have long described significant predation pressure in late summer, with bee colonies weakened or paralysed in their foraging activity.

It also consumes large amounts of sugars: ripe fruit, juices, sugary residues, bins. That is why domestic nuisance appears mainly in late summer, when fig trees, vines and windfall fruit create abundant resources.

Useful measures for a garden:

  • pick up fallen fruit rather than letting it ferment;
  • seal compost bins and rubbish bins tightly;
  • don't leave cans or sugary drinks open on an outdoor table;
  • protect outdoor meals — an insect-proof food cover is more effective, and infinitely less harmful, than an aerosol pulled out at the table.

For apiaries, the classic devices used against the Asian hornet — reduced entrances, adapted floors, mechanical protection — remain the first line of defence. On the other hand, non-selective spring trapping is discouraged by INRAE and nature protection bodies: it kills large numbers of non-target insects for a highly debated effect on hornet populations. If trapping is used at all, it must be targeted, late in the season, in the immediate vicinity of an apiary, and with selective cone traps.

What should I do if I find a nest?

What you must absolutely not do

  • Block the entrance hole: the hornets will come out another way, often inside the home.
  • Hose the nest down or set fire to it. Every year, house fires and serious accidents start this way.
  • Use an over-the-counter insecticide spray on a nest in a cavity: the product doesn't reach the heart of the colony and triggers a massive defensive response.
  • Climb a ladder alone, at night, with a head torch. That is the classic setup for a fall.

What you should do

  1. Keep children and pets away, and close the shutters and windows on the affected side.
  2. Mark off the area from a distance and bar access.
  3. Photograph from afar (using zoom) both the insect and the entrance hole: this will be decisive for identification.
  4. Report the sighting — see the next section.
  5. Call in a properly equipped professional (certified suit, telescopic pole, approved product). Destroying a nest in a cavity calls for specific expertise.

It has to be said plainly: unlike the Asian hornet, whose destruction is funded by some municipalities, there is no universal cost coverage for the Oriental hornet. Reporting: the most useful thing you can do in 2026

With a species in the colonisation phase, mapping matters as much as control. Every documented report helps measure the speed of spread, identify secondary outbreaks and guide public decisions.

Reliable channels:

  • the INPN (Inventaire national du patrimoine naturel) and its observation-recording app, the national reference run by the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle;
  • citizen-science platforms such as INPN Espèces, or regional alert portals for invasive alien species;
  • your regional FREDON and the beekeeping health defence groups, which are particularly responsive on this subject;
  • your town hall, which often centralises requests and knows the local contractors.

A good report includes: a sharp photo of the insect, the date, the municipality and approximate address, a photo of the nest entrance if visible, and an estimate of the traffic observed.

Should we expect a nationwide expansion?

Caution is in order. The Oriental hornet is thermophilic: its progress depends heavily on climatic conditions and the availability of shelter. The scenarios discussed by entomologists point to colonisation concentrated along the Mediterranean coast, the Rhône valley and warm urban areas, rather than an expansion as rapid and widespread as the Asian hornet's. Urban heat islands, however, clearly work in its favour.

What is certain is that the window for action is narrow. An invasive species is infinitely easier to manage at the isolated-outbreak stage than after it has become widely established — the lesson of the Asian hornet, which arrived in Lot-et-Garonne around 2004 and is now present across almost the entire country, has been costly enough not to be repeated.

Prevention on the building side: what to check before spring

Since the Oriental hornet exploits cavities, prevention is largely a matter of sealing up the building. Best done out of season, ideally in winter, when the nests are dead:

  • inspect and reseal faulty roller-shutter boxes;
  • fit fine-mesh rodent-proof grilles over crawl-space vents and roof openings — the same device keeps out rodents and wasps;
  • fill in open masonry joints and exposed hollow bricks;
  • fit ducts and vents with fine-mesh stainless-steel screening, which lasts longer than plastic;
  • check garden sheds, compost bins and buried inspection chambers in spring, before a founding queen moves in.

A final word on personal protective equipment. Anyone who deals with small wasp nests themselves knows it: cheap gear is dangerous. A full beekeeping suit with veil is the bare minimum, and it is not enough against a hornet inside a cavity — a nest in a cavity must remain a job for a professional.

The Oriental hornet is not an apocalyptic threat. It is one more species settling in, in a climate that suits it, and its main problem is one of coexistence within our buildings. The response comes down to three things: identify correctly, report systematically, intervene professionally. The rest — panic, sugar traps set out by the hundred, insecticides sprayed at random — does more damage than the insect itself.
