Introduction: a second exotic hornet nobody was talking about five years ago
When invasive hornets in France come up, everyone thinks of the Asian hornet. For twenty years, Vespa velutina nigrithorax has dominated media coverage, departmental control plans and pest-control invoices. But since 2021, a second species has quietly settled along the Mediterranean coast, and its expansion is accelerating: the Oriental hornet, Vespa orientalis.
First recorded in mainland France in Marseille in 2021, then documented in several neighbourhoods of the Bouches-du-Rhône, and later reported further west and further north season after season, this russet-and-yellow hornet is no longer an entomological curiosity. In 2026 it is the subject of active monitoring by the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle through the Inventaire national du patrimoine naturel (INPN), and of citizen-science programmes, notably those run by INRAE and regional beekeeping associations.
This article is not meant to stir up yet another panic. The aim is to provide what residents of the South, beekeepers and building managers genuinely lack: how to identify it without error, where it nests, what the real level of risk is, and above all how to report it properly. Because with a species in the early stages of colonisation, citizen data is worth as much as a national plan.

What exactly is Vespa orientalis?
The Oriental hornet is native to the Near and Middle East and widely distributed from the eastern Mediterranean basin through to Central Asia and the Horn of Africa. It has long been present in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Israel and Egypt. In recent decades it has pushed westwards across the Mediterranean: Italy (Rome, Sicily, Liguria), Spain, then France.
Its biology broadly resembles that of other European hornets:
- a founding queen overwinters alone and starts a nest in spring;
- the colony builds up through the summer;
- the population peak is reached in late summer and early autumn, with several hundred to a few thousand individuals depending on conditions;
- the colony then produces reproductive adults and dies off with the first cold spells, only the young queens surviving.
The difference lies in its ecology: Vespa orientalis is a thermophilic and xerophilic species, at home in hot, dry climates. That is precisely what much of the French Mediterranean rim is becoming, which explains why Marseille offers it a near-ideal habitat. It also copes extremely well with urban environments, which hardly helps.
Identifying it without mistakes
This is the crucial point, because most erroneous reports stem from confusion. Three species now coexist in southern France.

The reliable shortcut: the Asian hornet has "yellow socks" and a black thorax; the Oriental hornet is russet with a broad, clean yellow belt across the abdomen; the European hornet is more variegated.
One point naturalists often stress: the Oriental hornet has a yellow band on the top of the head and a yellow abdominal area which, in some individuals, reacts to light. Seen close up, the overall impression is of a russet and gold insect, very different from the markedly darker Asian hornet.
To observe it without getting close, a pair of compact binoculars is genuinely useful: it lets you pin down the colour criteria from five or ten metres, which is precisely the safe distance to keep. And for anyone who wants to go further in identifying garden hymenopterans, an insect identification guide published by Delachaux or Quae remains more reliable than online discussion groups, where mix-ups spread fast.
Where does it nest? The real point of difference
This is where the Oriental hornet changes the picture compared with the Asian hornet.
The Asian hornet typically builds a bulky aerial nest, often high in a tree and visible once the leaves have fallen. The Oriental hornet, by contrast, favours dark, sheltered cavities:
- roller-shutter boxes;
- crawl spaces, cellars, ducts;
- wall cavities, hollow bricks, dry-stone walls;
- burrows and underground cavities;
- compost bins, garden sheds, stacks of materials, buried meter boxes;
- tree hollows.
A very concrete practical consequence: the nest is often discovered too late, when you open something up. A shutter box, a crawl-space hatch, a garage cellar. The interventions reported in Marseille and neighbouring municipalities frequently involve colonies lodged in the building fabric, sometimes just centimetres from a living room.
Another consequence: there is no equivalent of the "I'll spot the nest from my garden in November" reflex. Surveillance relies on watching flight traffic — regular insect comings and goings towards the same opening, early in the morning or at the end of the day, is the most reliable signal.
What level of risk for residents?
Let's stick to the facts. The Oriental hornet is no more venomous than any other hornet. Its sting is painful and causes local swelling, and the real danger depends on two factors: the number of stings and whether the person stung is allergic.
According to the reference data set out by the Assurance Maladie (Ameli) and Vidal on hymenopteran stings:
- an isolated sting in a non-allergic person is treated locally (cold, disinfection, painkiller);
- a sting in the mouth or throat warrants an immediate call to the emergency services (15 in France);
- multiple stings (generally more than about ten, fewer in children) carry a risk of systemic toxic reaction and require medical care;
- a generalised allergic reaction — widespread hives, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness — is a life-threatening emergency, treated with auto-injectable adrenaline for people already diagnosed.
What makes the Oriental hornet distinctive, then, is not its venom: it is how close its nests are to homes. A colony in a shutter box carries a far higher risk of accidental disturbance than a nest twelve metres up a plane tree.
For people who garden regularly in affected areas, a first-aid kit containing dressings, antiseptic and an instant cold pack is far from excessive — it will come in handy for wasps, bees and splinters anyway. People already known to be allergic must keep the device prescribed by their allergist on them at all times, and replace it before each season.
