Asian Hornet: Why Mass Trapping Does More Harm Than Good

Introduction: the cut-off bottle hanging from the apple tree

It has been there since March. A 1.5-litre mineral water bottle, cut a third of the way down, the neck inverted to form a funnel, with a shallow pool of brown ale, white wine and blackcurrant syrup at the bottom. In late September, when you take it down to empty it, you find a blackish sludge of several hundred insects. Four or five Asian hornets, perhaps. And the rest: flies, common wasps, solitary bees, moths, hoverflies, ladybirds, a few honeybees.

That ratio is not a fluke: it is the rule. "Mass" trapping of the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax) remains one of the most widespread and least effective practices in domestic pest control in France. It rests on a sound intuition — fewer foundresses in spring, fewer nests in summer — but runs into a biological and statistical reality that the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (MNHN) and the ITSAP-Institut de l'abeille have been documenting for more than a decade.

This article is not saying you should do nothing. It is saying that what most people do does not work, and that what does work happens elsewhere: in nest detection, targeted protection of apiaries, and managing the risk of stings around the home.

What the Asian hornet is — and what it is not

An established species, no longer an emerging one

Having arrived in France via the Lot-et-Garonne department around 2004, most likely in a container of pottery shipped from China, Vespa velutina nigrithorax colonised almost all of mainland France in about twenty years. It is now listed among the invasive alien species of Union concern (EU Regulation 1143/2014, added in 2016) and classified as a category two health hazard for the honeybee by ministerial order of 26 December 2012.

That dual status has a practical consequence that is often misunderstood: it does not require anyone to destroy a nest on private land. There is no general obligation in France for a property owner to have a nest destroyed. Some municipalities or departments subsidise interventions; others do not. The framework is local, not national.

Identify the species first

Confusing the two hornets found in France leads people to destroy nests of species that are effectively protected or simply harmless.

The yellow legs are the most reliable detail at a reasonable distance. Night flight is a 100% discriminating trait: a large hornet tapping at the living-room window in the evening is a European hornet, therefore largely harmless to hives and effectively protected by its ecological role. A pair of compact binoculars lets you settle the question from a window, without approaching a nest entrance — it is the only genuinely useful piece of equipment at this identification stage.

Why spring trapping does not work

The foundress arithmetic

The classic argument: "every foundress trapped in March is one less nest in July." Arithmetically appealing, biologically wrong.

A mature Asian hornet nest produces between 300 and 500 future queens in autumn. Of that total, natural winter mortality — cold, damp, mould, predation, failure to establish — eliminates more than 99% of individuals. On average, only one or two foundresses per parent nest survive to found a viable colony. Work by the MNHN (Quentin Rome's team, Inventaire national du patrimoine naturel) also points out that competition between foundresses is fierce in spring: they kill one another, steal each other's primary nests, and natural regulation is already extremely severe.

Trapping a few dozen foundresses in a garden therefore merely swaps natural mortality for artificial mortality, with no measurable effect on the number of nests at the end of the season. No published study to date has demonstrated a significant reduction in nest density in an area subjected to spring trapping.

Selectivity, the real problem

This is where the balance sheet turns distinctly negative. The ITSAP-Institut de l'abeille and INRAE have assessed the selectivity of sugary and fermented bait traps, both commercial and homemade. The orders of magnitude converge: 95 to 99% of catches are non-target insects.

The classic, non-selective bottle trap kills:

  • wasps and paper wasps, caterpillar predators and garden allies;
  • solitary bees (mason bees, mining bees), early pollinators essential to fruit trees;
  • hoverflies, whose larvae eat aphids by the hundred;
  • moths, a group already in marked decline;
  • and, with complete irony, honeybees.

Put another way: a bottle trap hung in an orchard in March does, on balance, more damage to pollinators than an Asian hornet would over the same period.

The MNHN and the Office français de la biodiversité have explicitly advised against non-selective spring trapping in the recommendations circulated to local authorities since 2017. That position has not changed.

What about "selective" traps?

There are models with calibrated cones, featuring exit holes of 5.5 to 6 mm that let small insects escape, and protein rather than sugar baits late in the season. They do genuinely improve selectivity, without bringing it to 100%. A selective Asian hornet trap makes sense in one specific case: in front of a hive, in summer and autumn, when hornets hover in front of the landing board. Not in March at the bottom of a garden.

What actually works around the home

1. Spot primary nests in April and May

In April, the foundress builds a primary nest on her own, first the size of a golf ball, then of an orange. It is often sheltered and low down: under a canopy, in a garden shed, a water meter box, a hut, an outbuilding, under an upturned patio table. At this stage a single female occupies it, activity is low, and destruction is simple and low-risk.

A methodical inspection of the garden's shelters in late April pays off infinitely more than a whole quarter of trapping. A powerful wide-beam torch lets you sweep the undersides of roof timbers and the dark corners of a shed without stepping inside.

2. Locate the secondary nest before it gets big

From June onwards, the colony usually relocates higher up: treetop, dense hedge, gable end, rarely in a cavity. The secondary nest reaches 40 to 80 cm across by September and can house several thousand individuals.

Signs to watch for:

  • steady, directional air traffic, always along the same line, above the garden;
  • hornets hovering in front of a flowering ivy clump, a bin, a compost heap;
  • in the vegetable garden, hornets on ripe fruit (figs, grapes, pears) in August and September;
  • a continuous humming audible under a tree in calm weather.

September is precisely the month when nests become visible and defensive aggression peaks, as the colony protects its production of reproductive individuals. It is also the month when leaves start to fall and reveal nests that went unnoticed all summer.

3. Never tackle an active nest yourself

The Asian hornet is no more venomous than a wasp when it comes to a single sting. The danger lies in the number of stings and in collective defence: a disturbed colony mobilises dozens of workers and pursues the intruder for 10 to 20 metres, sometimes further. The serious accidents recorded in France almost all involve people who attempted destruction with an insecticide spray, a jet of water, fire, or by shaking a branch.

A few non-negotiable rules:

  • a safety radius of at least 5 metres around an active nest, more if you are using a mower or hedge trimmer;
  • never burn a nest: fire risk and dispersal of the colony;
  • never block the entrance: the hornets will chew through the wall elsewhere;
  • no consumer insecticide spray with short range: the actual reach is 4 to 6 metres, insufficient for a nest up high, and the product does not penetrate the envelope.

Destruction is a job for a professional equipped with a certified anti-hornet suit and a telescopic injection pole, and trained to work at height. Costs recorded in 2026 range from €90 to €180 for a low, accessible nest, and from €200 to €450 for a treetop nest requiring a cherry picker. 4. Protect an apiary, not a garden

For hobby beekeepers — and there are many in peri-urban areas — effectiveness comes down to three levers documented by ITSAP:

  • muzzles and entrance grids limiting harassment at the landing board;
  • electric harps, effective but expensive and to be monitored for their impact on other insects;
  • strengthening colonies: a strong hive holds out, a weak hive collapses because foraging is blocked.

A selective hornet trap placed right next to the hives complements the setup, but never replaces it.

Asian hornet stings: the right reflexes

The venom of Vespa velutina contains, like that of wasps, phospholipases and melittin-like compounds. A single sting in a non-allergic person causes intense pain, local swelling and redness that subside within 24 to 48 hours.

What to do, in line with the recommendations issued by the Assurance Maladie (Ameli) and Vidal:

  1. Move the person away from the area, without sudden movements.
  2. Remove rings and bracelets before swelling sets in.
  3. Bring a heat source close (the tip of an extinguished cigarette, a hairdryer held at a distance): the venom is heat-labile.
  4. Disinfect, then apply cold — a reusable gel pack kept in the freezer earns its place well beyond stings.
  5. Monitor for an hour.

Call 15 or 112 immediately in case of: multiple stings (more than 10 in an adult, fewer in a child), a sting in the mouth or throat, faintness, generalised hives, facial swelling, breathing difficulty or vomiting. People already identified as allergic to hymenoptera should carry their adrenaline auto-injector at all times, prescribed and renewed by their allergist.

The Asian hornet is in France to stay. The realistic objective is no longer eradication — scientists gave up on that a decade ago — but managing local risk: protecting apiaries, making the surroundings of homes safe, and putting an end to practices that cost biodiversity dearly for zero benefit.
