Bed bugs have made headlines, and for good reason: these discreet insects spread fast and turn nights into a nightmare. The good news: the earlier you detect them, the simpler and faster the treatment. Here is how to recognise an infestation and act effectively.
Recognising the signs of an infestation
Bed bugs hide during the day and bite at night. The most common clues are:
- aligned or clustered bites on exposed areas (arms, legs, back);
- small black spots (droppings) on the sheets, mattress seams or bed base;
- blood stains on the sheets when you wake up;
- the presence of white eggs or translucent shed skins in the corners.
At the slightest doubt, inspect the mattress seams, headboard and skirting boards with a torch.

The right steps at the first signs
Before a professional intervenes, a few reflexes limit the spread:
- Wash sheets, covers and clothing at 60 °C minimum, then dry at high temperature.
- Vacuum thoroughly (mattress, base, skirting boards) and throw the bag away immediately.
- Do not move your belongings from room to room: you could scatter the bugs.
- Avoid over-the-counter insecticides used at random: badly applied, they scatter the insects and create resistance.
Why call a professional
An established infestation rarely resists household measures alone. A professional treatment — dry steam, heat treatment or targeted biocides — guarantees complete elimination, eggs included. Discover our bed bug treatment services and, to equip your home, our pest control products.
