When temperatures drop, mice leave the outdoors to find warmth and food… often in our homes. A single mouse can quickly become a small colony. Here is how to avoid a winter invasion.
The signs of an intrusion
Discreet, mice give themselves away through:
- small black droppings shaped like grains of rice;
- scratching noises at night in the walls or attic;
- gnawed packaging and tooth marks;
- a musky urine odour in confined spaces.

Closing the door to rodents
A mouse slips through a 6 mm hole. To block its way:
- Inspect door thresholds, pipe openings, vents and cracks.
- Seal the openings with steel wool or mortar.
- Store food (including pet food) in airtight containers.
- Tidy away wood, cardboard and clutter that offer hiding places.
Acting effectively
