Bed bugs are not caught through a lack of hygiene: they travel. A hotel stay, a rental or a simple journey is enough to bring back a few individuals… which will become an infestation. Here is how to travel with peace of mind.

On arrival: inspect before settling in

Before putting down your things, take two minutes to check the room:

  • go over the headboard, the mattress seams and the bed base with a torch;
  • look for small black spots, blood stains or flattened brown insects;
  • inspect the nightstand and the armchairs near the bed.

During the stay: the right reflexes

  1. Place the suitcase on the metal luggage rack or in the bathroom, never on the bed or the carpet.
  2. Keep your clothes in the closed suitcase rather than in the drawers.
  3. Raise your belongings off the floor as much as possible.

On your return: cutting off any infestation

Back home, do not bring the suitcase into the bedroom. In the garage or on the balcony:

  1. Wash clothes at 60 °C or tumble-dry them hot for 30 minutes.
  2. Vacuum the inside of the suitcase and throw the bag away.
  3. Watch for any sign of bites in the following weeks.
