Bed bugs are not caught through a lack of hygiene: they travel. A hotel stay, a rental or a simple journey is enough to bring back a few individuals… which will become an infestation. Here is how to travel with peace of mind.
On arrival: inspect before settling in
Before putting down your things, take two minutes to check the room:
- go over the headboard, the mattress seams and the bed base with a torch;
- look for small black spots, blood stains or flattened brown insects;
- inspect the nightstand and the armchairs near the bed.

During the stay: the right reflexes
- Place the suitcase on the metal luggage rack or in the bathroom, never on the bed or the carpet.
- Keep your clothes in the closed suitcase rather than in the drawers.
- Raise your belongings off the floor as much as possible.
On your return: cutting off any infestation
Back home, do not bring the suitcase into the bedroom. In the garage or on the balcony:
- Wash clothes at 60 °C or tumble-dry them hot for 30 minutes.
- Vacuum the inside of the suitcase and throw the bag away.
- Watch for any sign of bites in the following weeks.
